Student workload and credits in Mexico

In Mexico, the workload and credits that a student can have in a semester varies.

For example, in most of the cases, students take bigger loads of credits during their first academic year. They take around 38-46 credits depending on the institution plus complementary courses like languages (which do not have any credits).

For example, for the bachelor in civil engineering, the full syllabus estimates a total of 398 credits in which, 362 are mandatory and 36 are electives. This total of credits is distributed in 9 semesters and the amount of credits can change.

Sometimes, in the higher semesters, students take fewer courses and one or no complementary courses to work with the mandatory internship program which is a full semester.

They also must prove at the end of their studies that they speak at least one or two foreign languages.

The completion of the credits is mandatory, and it is allowed to have some extra time have them all. Occasionally, some students may take 10 or 11 semesters to conclude their studies instead of the original 9, this depends on the type of institution and it also requires approval from the university authorities.
