In the Developmental Psychology course at our campus, the syllabus can be restructured to include active learning approaches which require the student to do more than sit and listen to lectures, but to be more actively engaged in their learning. It would include things like projects, and collaborative work. Another aspects relates to what is called universal design of the instruction, which would encourage the faculty to design their teaching in such a way that students have options for how they take in and process information, e.g. including more use of videos, providing different forms of assessment so that the assessment does not privilege one type of learner etc. While it should help to make teaching and learning more exciting for both lecturer and students, it calls for more work than just lecturing. The revision of the final assessment would to include more coursework instead of 100% final exams. This approach would include active learning approaches which require the student to do more than sit and listen to lectures, but to be actively engaged in their learning. This approach would also be beneficial to the students, many of whom are interested in Early Childhood Education.
